Responsibilities

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Vaccine Development & LCM Portfolio Strategy leads and drives high-value NV Development/LCM portfolio (post-M2 projects), company projects, or strategic initiatives in order to develop/maintain Sanofi Pasteur’s leading position. The Vaccine Development & LCM Head position is responsible and accountable for the strategic and operational oversight of development and LCM portfolio, supporting the senior management team in achieving Corporate goals and delivering differentiated vaccines to the market in a timely and cost effective manner and in partnership with internal and external stakeholders ensuring evidence generation on the vaccines meets the desired label claims and optimally positions the product launch from an uptake and public health impact perspective.  The NV development and LCM portfolio includes international ambitions, including the oversight of the important China and Japan product portfolio.

The Vaccine Development & LCM Head has both Strategic & Management Responsibilities 

  • Manages human resources: Develops Global Project Heads (GPH) and beyond

  • Guarantee & constructively challenge GPH/GPT on the strategy and execution on NV projects in alignment with the Company & Franchise strategy. 

  • As member of PSC, TARC, VRDLT, STRC, RDSLT, NPEP, and EIEC ensures & promotes a unified R&D vision and develop Strategic Roadmap covering the entire Value Chain for the Development & LCM portfolio

  • Act as a leader of specific strategic and transversal complex initiatives to support Sanofi Pasteur ambition and challenge the status-quo

  • Work with GPHs and relevant internal and external stakeholders (including governance) to ensure establishment and alignment on TPPs, iEGPs, iSCPs, portfolio analytics, stakeholder engagement plans, IP and communication strategies/plans for each project

  • Work with GPHs to ensure strategies and execution plans for each project are a stretch, credible and have defined the key risks transparent to senior management and have strong and aligned mitigation plans

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Management of the Global Project Head(s):

1. The Vaccine development & LCM Head manages Global Project Heads, who are accountable for the NV project progression 

  • Works cross functionally to identify & propose appropriate GPH to decision committee

  • Ensures that GPH have continuous improvement orientation through adequate qualification, training and mentoring

  • Set up & approves GPH objectives, and works closely with direct reports to create individual performance and ambitious development goals and ensure effective dynamics at GPT level and between the GPH/GPT and GBL/GBT, where appropriate

  • Ensures reporting to the Senior Management: Global R&D, IDCC, PSC, TARC, VRDLT, RDSLT

2. Ensures that Global Project Head has full awareness and connectivity to appropriate Company and Franchise strategies and objectives, environment evolution allowing GPH to anticipate project risks & identify opportunities

3. Helps the Global Project Head in the resolution of complex situations and make recommendations to proper decision-making bodies by developing the right network and generate empowerment. Fosters an environment of project centricity.

Strategic Role

  • The  Vaccine Development & LCM Head develops good working relationships at multiple levels (internally & externally) and ensures alignment & coordination with major stakeholders across the Company.

  • Ensures alignment of the R&D roadmap with the overall business objectives of Sanofi Pasteur working in tight collaboration with all R&D functions as well as Commercial Operations/Franchises, Industrial Operations, RA, MA, Legal and other Sanofi Pasteur business & support functions and Sanofi.

Scope and dimensions

Recommendations made by this position are of a strategic, critical nature with company-wide impact, full autonomy & accountability for product development activities, freedom to act.

Vaccine Development & LCM Head is a critical member of PSC, TARC, STRC, VRDLT, GLN, RDSLT, NPEP, EIEC.  As the leader of Vaccine Development & LCM portfolio, the incumbent ensures that GPHs and GPTs engage effectively with the governance in a value-added manner, as per stage gate progressions and ensure that GPH/GPT are well-prepared for any such engagements within the Vaccine GBBU and with the broader Sanofi Groupe, i.e. IDCC, etc.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and Work Experience

  • Strong scientific education and experience with deep understanding of infectious disease and significant experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry with broad understanding on the vaccine value Chain »: 

  • PhD (in a science field) and/or MD with at least 15 years of experience in pharmaceutical industry or 10y experience in vaccine development or equivalent experience in other disciplines in the Vaccine Value Chain such as R&D, Medical , industrial operations, regulatory

  • Experience in or demonstrated evidence for the capacity to work in a team setting and lead international, cross-functional teams of highly skilled professionals, portfolio management experience

Competencies

  • The position requires an excellent understanding of the vaccine business, countries’ specificities (Japan, China, EU, US…) and a customer-oriented approach to have a transversal vision of all functions.  Being well-connected externally with KOLs is important.

  • The position requires leadership, strategic vision, and excellent interpersonal skills.in order to interact with senior management from R&D, IA, GMA, RA, Global ComOps (Franchise, General Managers), Legal, IP…

  • Ability to cooperate transversally, influence and negotiate within the entire organization with upper management, able to challenge the status quo

  • Ability to understand in depth sciences , to analyze, develop and implement strategy in combination with bias & risks management

  •  Strong leadership/ management skills and impactful communication
