Position Overview:

The Head of the Non-Viral Gene Therapy Research Cluster in the Genomic Medicine Unit will be a scientific innovator, drive excellence and rigor, and develop a cutting-edge non-viral gene therapy platform to enable Sanofi’s ambition of delivering genomic medicines for both rare and common diseases. The role will manage research teams supported by multidisciplinary platforms and scientists based in the Boston area.  S/he will identify and validate new targets using a variety of tools, including human genetics, human sample analyses, bioinformatics, clinical data, and preclinical in vitro and in vivo models, implementing new models and technologies. The Cluster Head will work closely with research, development, CMC and manufacturing colleagues to ensure the progression of projects from concept to clinical testing, focusing on developing and validating a strong translational rationale.  S/he will maintain a leadership position in the non-viral gene therapy research and development communities, connecting Sanofi scientists with collaborators around the globe.

The role will report to the Head of the Genomics Medicine Unit and work closely with the Global Head of Research to develop and integrate a research strategy within the broader GMU and R&D strategy, contribute to portfolio review and prioritization, business development discussions, and will be part of the GMU Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the ca. 15-20 scientists globally in the non-viral gene therapy Cluster with the GMU and Tidal Therapeutics who are experienced in a range of disciplines, from molecular and cell biology, pharmacology, assay development and systems physiology to discover, advance and develop therapeutic concepts utilizing gene therapy.

  • Recruit, retain and develop world-class scientists to continue to build teams to advance genomic medicine research and development efforts.

  • Together with the leadership team direct the genomic medicines strategy and support overall R&D strategy by advancing projects in the current pipeline and building the future portfolio.

  • Collaborate productively with scientific colleagues across the GMU, Sanofi- Tidal colleagues and in Sanofi’s Therapeutic Areas of Immunology and Inflammation, Oncology, and Rare and Neurological diseases, along with platforms such as Large Molecule Research, Medicinal Chemistry, DMPK, Preclinical Safety, Translational Sciences, and CMC.

  • Manage collaborative relationships with project leads, key internal and external stakeholders, research platform and business development leadership to resource and advance portfolio projects.

  • Lead internally by communicating strategy and portfolio progress to key stakeholders in Research, Development, Commercial,  and with other key business unit partners.

  • Lead externally by presenting at national and international scientific and gene therapy and disease-focused meetings, publishing cutting edge science and developing and maintaining key collaborations around the globe. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD or MD/PhD with postdoctoral and/or fellowship training. 10+ years of experience developing and leading multi-disciplinary gene therapy research programs. Experience in drug discovery and development strongly preferred.

  • Thought leadership and deep expertise supported by an exceptional record of research and publications in the area of non-viral gene delivery technology and applications.

  • Deep expertise in discovery research and translational human biology.

  • Strong academic and industry scientific networks.

  • Understanding of complex research landscapes globally, ability to identify cutting-edge research and new directions, strong academic and biotech/pharma scientific networks.

  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary, matrixed teams.

  • Outstanding oral communication, management, and interpersonal skills.
