Position Summary:

In accordance with Sanofi priorities and Sanofi Pasteur Industrial Affairs and R&D strategy, the Vaccines Industrial Affairs, Head of Engineering Technical Services (ETS) North America Projects will support the objectives of the Industrial Strategy, Focusing on Growth by leading the regional vaccines’ capital portfolio for major Tier 1 projects in Canada and the USA. As the regional global engineering execution lead, he/she is accountable for all project management delivery aspects related to the strategic execution of the capital project portfolio from conceptual design through construction to the commissioning, qualification, and hand over of the facilities.

He/she is part of the Vaccines ETS Leadership Team and will be responsible to lead a portfolio of capital project executions teams including internal Sanofi engineering senior project managers and directors, as well as contractors and service providers. This includes the pre-qualification and management of our A&E design firms, construction contractors, equipment vendors and our 3rd party delivery partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the project management and delivery for the portfolio of Tier 1 major projects in North America ensuring optimal development and execution of our projects in accordance with the company’s safety, quality, performance, schedule and cost objectives including:

    • Design – Feasibility studies and concept/basic/detail design

    • Execution – Procurement, construction, equipment, commissioning and qualification (IQ/OQ) as well as assisting with the launch of PQ/PV activities.

    • Close-Out – Transition to facility owners, and financial close-out of all project related capital and opex activities.

  • Manage, develop, and oversee good engineering practices in project management. Ensure the development of highly functioning skill sets related to the diverse business areas of this function by working closely to the various site Technical Services & Engineering Heads and Program Directors.

  • Facilitate and foster a truly safety-first, quality always culture across the region that is best in class and respects cultural diversity and capabilities. This includes driving technological innovation within projects to monitor, report, manage and deliver on the project’s schedule, budget, resources, and risks.

  • Help develop the Capex Plan in line with the company’s industrial strategy to ensure that capital investment projects have been prioritized, evaluated, and reviewed when they are included in the investment plan or before they are authorized. Participate in evaluations of projects for compliance, HSE, capacities, process requirements etc. at each stage gate review.

  • As a ETS Leadership Team Member lead and encourage the development of a diverse team of engineers, technical experts and SMEs including evolving the structural organization and competencies of the function within the framework of the company’s project delivery model.

  • Advance diverse project execution delivery models to procure and foster long-term partnerships with key 3rd party delivery and service partners including A&E firms, equipment suppliers, construction companies and project execution partners.

HSE Requirement/Statement:

  • Supervises and monitors compliance with employment and health and safety legislation to ensure that contractors and suppliers globally are working within the local policies, procedures, and regulations applicable to their work.

  • Participates in the investigation of incidents and work-related accidents, incidents, and/or illnesses.

  • Responds promptly to all health and safety concerns or incidents and ensure completion of the appropriate documentation in a timely manner.

  • Takes every reasonable precaution to ensure the health and safety of staff and contractors.

  • Ensures that protective equipment and clothing required is used by staff and contractors.

  • Cooperates and assists the Joint Health and Safety Committee in carrying out its functions.

  • Advises staff and contractors of any potential or actual health and safety hazard of which they are aware.

Major Challenges:

  • Demonstrate excellent business partnering skills at a senior level within the organization to manage a diverse portfolio of capital projects within various global programs across multiple North American sites to effectively execute best-in-class major capital project delivery activities.

  • Ensure the effective delivery of these projects to Sanofi’s high safety and quality standards and often to aggressive schedule and cost constraints.

  • Be an advocator and mentor to encourage and implement a diverse workforce in what is often very non-diverse industries of engineering and construction.


  • As a direct report to the Head of Engineering Technical Services (ETS), Vaccines the Head of ETS North American Projects is a member of the ETS Leadership Team and works closely not only with the other Global Engineering function within the Vaccine’s ETS group but also other GBUs and global and local functions including Operations, HSE, Quality, Procurement etc.

  • He/She will supervise all execution activities for major Tier 1 capital projects with an annual portfolio budget of about >400m€/yr with total investments of inflight projects of ~€2.0B.

  • He/She will have direct managerial responsibility of 5-10 ETS senior project managers/directors and oversee >1,000 A&E design, equipment, and construction contractors globally at various stages of project execution activities.

  • He/She will interface with the senior management from engineering, equipment suppliers, and construction companies globally through the life cycles of a capital project from design through to handover for the establishment and delivery of contracts, as well as facilitating ongoing supplier relationship management.

  • Regional travel within Canada and the USA may be required up to 20% of the time and potential the occasional transcontinental trip.

Key Requirements:

  • Technical educational background in Engineering, Project and/or Portfolio Management.

  • Professional Engineer and/or PMP certification a plus.

  • 10+ years of international leadership experience with blue-chip companies required for large capital projects >50€m, with strong knowledge of occupational health and safety, best-in-class construction practices, and industry regulation knowledge.

  • 5-10 years’ experience working in and managing within a large, global, matrix team of professionals from the Client side including working with larger global programs.

  • 5-10 years’ experience working with and influencing international A&E design firms, large construction management companies, general contractors, and supply vendors around the world in various cultures to deliver projects within active industrial sites.

  • Extensive experience and knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry including GMP, FDA and EU guidelines and regional/country authorities’ guidelines.

  • Fluent in English / conversant in French a plus.

  • Verbal and written communication, presentation, relationship management and influencing skills both at a hands-on level with tradesmen but also with senior leadership within an organization.

  • Conceptual, analytical, and strategic thinking skills.

  • Proven international leadership promoting motivation and empowering others to accomplish individual, team and organizational objectives.
