Facility and Utility Engineer

The Facility and Utility Engineer will support strategic capital and operational improvement projects in the Toronto Industrial Affairs Organization.  Specifically, this role will support the new manufacturing facility project and support for other site projects as an SME. The individual will be required to design and execute the engineering scope of major capital projects and / or exhibit demonstrated expertise in these activities.  In the lead role, the individual will support the engineering lead and should be considered as an expert in the design and fabrication, commissioning and qualification of facilities, utilities, and process equipment in a GMP environment, and will be accountable for producing and implementing designs according to industry standards, and Sanofi best practices.

Key Accountabilities:

  • The individual is considered an expert in the design and fabrication, commissioning and qualification of the facilities, utilities & process equipment in a cGMP environment.

  • Design Development and specifications: Responsible for developing the basic engineering deliverables that meet URS and compliance requirements including best practices guidelines.

  • Accountable for technical quality of design. Perform appropriate reviews with stakeholders. Make sure engineering contractor calculations are correct and review vendor designs for adherence to specification. Participate in PTI reviews. Responsible for design that meets project budget and schedule.

  • Commissioning and qualification: Support C&Q technical execution as an SME.  Review C&Q test plans for technical content. Support mechanical completion and start-up. Lead or participate in FAT SAT, and, Commissioning test plan execution.

  • Technical engineering support to manufacturing: Provide technical guidance to site engineering teams upon request. Apply lessons learned from other sites to help with trouble shooting, design issues and testing specifics. Responsible to understand site specific standards and procedures.

  • Participate in global networks: Contribute lessons learned to the network. Participate in global initiatives when requested. Responsible to understand current global design guidelines and application.

Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS degree in an Engineering facilities or process disciplines.

  • 5-10 years with a strong experience in design engineering in Biotechnology, Biopharmaceutical or Pharmaceutical industries.

  • Organizational planning and project management skills.

  • Experience in design and execution in process equipment will be appreciated.

  • Experience in design and execution of the HVAC systems.

  • Experience with Clean Utilities.

  • Experience in cGMP manufacturing environments related to the design of facilities.

  • Additional experience in building start-up and qualification is preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external team members is essential. 

  • This position requires strong analytical skills (engineering analysis), hands-on troubleshooting skills and the capability to utilize AutoCAD, analysis software and company quality system software.
