Sanofi CHC, a leading manufacturer and marketer of healthcare (OTC), personal care, and skin care products is searching for a Senior Director, CHC R&D Personal Care to lead innovation, and new product research and development in support of local categories.  Sanofi CHC’s extensive portfolio of brands include Allegra, Nasacort, Xyzal, Icy Hot, Aspercreme, Zantac, ACT, Gold Bond and Selsun Blue.  Sanofi CHC is a global business unit of Sanofi, a multinational pharmaceutical company based in Paris, France. 

Job Summary

The Senior Director, CHC R&D Personal Care is directly responsible for leading a team of high performance scientists to effectively ideate, create, prototype and develop the new science based product formulations against business and  consumer needs, champion collaboration with other cross functional leaders and teams to rapidly deliver the launches, strengthen our culture of innovation by championing new and novel ways to ideate or source new products, provide mentoring to ensure team engagement, growth, talent identification for a strong foundation for future growth. The Senior Director will lead and manage all technical aspects of product development for Gold Bond, ACT, Selsun Blue. This individual will connect deeply with consumers to identify gaps in the market and translate insights to create new product platforms and improve current offerings. This technical leadership role requires a strong blend of business acumen, understanding of consumer insights and research, talent development & management, project management skills, product design vision, financial savvy, effective communication skills, and understanding and application of innovation process. He/she will serve as a key partner with local categories leaders in marketing, Regulatory, Medical, Industry Affairs to enable the building of a robust pipeline that supports the company business growth strategy and ambition.

Role Specific Responsibilities

  • Leads a high-performance product development and research team with skill sets that align with the capability needs of our innovation and business growth strategy.
  • Leads the local category team to create science based robust product formulations to deliver new and novel products which meet or exceed consumer expectations.
  • Owns and leads the delivery of new products on time and within budget for all local categories skin care, oral care and hair care, both internal and with external partners.
  • Partners with US Marketing, Local Categories to build a robust pipeline of innovation. Builds a short and long term innovation strategy to fuel growth that is best in class. Partners with Marketing to champion new innovation through the NGI (stage gate) process.
  • Builds and implements best practice and capability to achieve innovation that is consumer preferred and expert recommended.
  • Ensures efficiency of processes which drive speed to market and compliance to appropriate CHC Process and Governance
  • Builds and manages innovation budget for product development and related activities. Assesses work load and allocates resources as appropriate.
  • Co-defines (with Industrial Affairs/Regulatory/Medical, BD&L) the make or buy for the shortest possible time-to-market
  • Communicates to stakeholders regular and timely updates on innovation
  • Is a member of the CHC R&D US leadership team
  • Provides technical leadership and leverage industry trends and emerging new technologies that can provide the organization with a competitive advantage
  • Creates and institutionalizes process to ensure all key stakeholders and cross functional partners are fully aligned on new product deliverables.
  • Champions’ collaborations with key stakeholders and partners to ensure formulations, products and time-lines meet internal expectations.
  • Champions processes and develops strategic partnerships (internal and external) to deliver rapid prototypes to marketing.
  • Creates forums where employees and external partners can share and pitch ideas to fuel the innovation.
  • Skillfully communicates the science (Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, etc.) related to product formulations to effectively influence formula decisions, product design and claim substantiation.
  • Participates in due diligence of various new business development opportunities such as licensing of technology, Rx to OTC Switches, acquisitions, etc.…

Basic Qualifications

  • Advanced degree from an accredited college in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacy or other Healthcare Sciences required.  B.S. – minimum 15 years’ experience, M.S – minimum 13 years’ experience, and/or PhD-minimum 10 years’ experience. 
  • Experience in consumer healthcare R&D with a track record of successfully developing and launching a range of new products in skin care, oral care or personal care.   Formulation development experience with various cosmetic or personal care forms is a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of cosmetics, liquids, semi-solids, formulation, analytical chemistry, cGMP, regulatory affairs, clinical development, business processes ( stage gates) , consumer insights, category management,  patent process, and project management
  • Self-motivated, inspiring, strong leader of people with a compelling communication style. Track record of building a culture of innovation.
  • Demonstrated experience in being able to take the "Science" and "translate" it into consumer experiences.
  • Demonstrates “Enterprise Thinking" and "Leadership Characteristics" that include:
    • Understanding the Business- Knows the business and the mission-critical technical and functional skills needed to do the job: understands various types of business propositions and understands how businesses operate in general; learns new methods and technologies easily.
    • Making Complex Decisions- Can solve even the toughest and most complex of problems; great at gleaning meaning from whatever data is available; is a quick study of the new and different; adds personal wisdom and experience to come to the best conclusion and solution, given the situation; uses multiple problem-solving tools and techniques. 
    • Keeping on Point- Can quickly separate the mission-critical from the nice to have and the trivial; quickly senses what the next most useful item is to work on; focuses on the critical few tasks that really add value and puts aside or delays the rest. 
    • Getting Organized- Is well organized, resourceful and plans ; effective and efficient at marshalling multiple resources to get things done; lays out tasks in sufficient detail to mark the trail; is able to get items done with less and in less time; can work on multiple tasks at once without losing track; foresees and plans around obstacles. 
    • Getting Work Done Through Others- Manages people well; gets the most and best out of the people he/she has; sets and communicates guiding goals; measures accomplishments, holds people accountable, and gives useful feedback; delegates and develops; keeps people informed; provides coaching for today and for the future.
    • Managing Work Processes- Is an effective process, work flow and systems designer; establishes high quality metrics and track progress; sets up systems that can almost mange themselves; is a master at the effectiveness and efficiency of work systems; can quickly diagnose and fix work flow problems; always looking for incremental process improvement. 
  • Experience leading internal and external teams to successfully launch new products, and the ability to clearly communicate and influence at senior leadership levels, as well as with project teams
  • Experience with contract manufacturers for personal care products, have taken the newly developed products from lab scale to commercialization.
  • Demonstrated strategic influence of key internal & external stakeholders to take actions that will advance shared interests & business goals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of compliance with legal and regulatory to ensure governance standards are met.
  • Proven ability to solve complex technical and operational problems in a timely manner.

The successful candidate will be required to sign and execute a restricted covenant upon hire.
