The Global R&D Innovation/Emerging Science Project Lead will be responsible for identifying external opportunities at the cutting edge of vaccine research and development with the potential for transformative advances in the way vaccines of the future are discovered, developed and evaluated. The Innovation Project Lead will have under his direction one or more programs, funded by Sanofi Pasteur R&D and managed collaboratively with an external academic, biotech or government partner. Reporting to the Global Head, R&D Innovation/Emerging Sciences, the Project Head is responsible for providing strategic, scientific and operational leadership of each innovation project while maintaining timelines and budget with a focus on North American partnerships.  The ideal candidate should have a strong background in any of the following areas of vaccine R&D – bacteriology, virology, and/or immunology with experience in the development of vaccines and a strong entrepreneurial mindset.


  • Under the supervision of the Global Head, the Project LeaL will contribute to the development of the Global R&D Innovation Roadmap and priorities by providing scientific guidance and direction in his/her field of exerptise.

  • Identify external stakeholders, advisors, and partners/collaborators that will enable the execution of the innovation projects.

  • Develop the project workplan and budget in collaboration with external partners and the relevant SP functions.

  • Develop the project deliverables, risks, and Go/No Go decision stagegates. 

  • Through his/her leadership, drive the innovation project through defined milestones in collaboration with the external partner, enabled by funding within the Innovation Emerging Sciences budget envelope.

  • Serve as the key point of contact for the program and provide regular updates to key governance groups within Sanofi Pasteur for validation of the scienitifc investments, scientific plans and progress against program milestones.

  • Contribute to additional external collaborations as defined and aligned with the Project Lead’s subject matter expertise.

  • Represent Sanofi Pasteur at external scientific conferences and international meetings.

  • Collaborate with key functions throughout the Sanofi Pasteur and Sanofi Group organizations, such as External R&D, Alliance Management, Early and Late Development Portfolio Groups, Chief Scientific Officer, etc.

  • Collaborate with the Global Head by providing scientific guidance and direction in his/her field of expertise in the development of the Global R&D Innovation Roadmap and innovation priorities

  • Identify and engage potential collaborators, develop the project workplan and budget in collaboration with external partners and the relevant SP functions. 

  • Lead >1 project per year.  Develop the project deliverables, risks, and Go/No Go decisions.  Through his/her leadership, drive the innovation project through defined milestones in collaboration with the external partner.

  • The successful candidate will need to actively identify and engage with key scientific leaders across the vaccine development space and make timely investments in high-risk/high-reward areas to ensure Sanofi Pasteur’s competitive positioning.

  • The Project Lead will need to act by influence to ensure that Sanofi Pasteur’s investments are producing high quality, timely outcomes.

  • The Project Lead will need to work with the Global Head to ensure alignment across the business organization and with the Vaccine R&D leadership team.


  • Ph.D. in any of the relevant fields – bacteriology, virology, immunology, or a related discipline or an M.D. or Pharm.D.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in Vaccines R&D

  • Resourceful and knowledgeable in scouting/networking for potential external partners

  • Project leadership, management, budget management and management experience required

  • Proficiency in managing by influence

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills - ability to work with individuals at different levels

  • Agent of change

  • Demonstrated team and negotiation skills

  • Strongly results oriented

  • Fluent English communication skills, verbal and written; fluency in French a plus

  • Ability to work in an international context

  • Ability to challenge the status quo and proactively propose changes
