The Digital Strategy team is part of the Sanofi Digital organization (digital, data and IT, $1+ billion in spend) a global enabling function within Sanofi.  The group consists of both a strategy component and a partnering component.  The strategy component is all about insights, thought leadership on the role of digital to transform our business, turned into strategic themes around build, buy and partner.  The partnering component will develop strategies on partnering, then source, execute, and establish partner relationships that address the Sanofi Group´s digital strategic priorities.  This leader will work in both areas.

Our strategy team identifies strategic themes based on the following inputs.  Inputs include technology and emerging technology trends on role of digital and data technologies to transform.  Inputs also customer and health care professional (HCP) needs and expectations on role of digital technology.  Lastly, the strategy team looks at inputs on enterprise goals and hypothesis on where we build competitive advantage.  These are combined together into compelling (and consistent) storylines and narratives on the “why” and “where” we should focus (used with our leaders, our partners etc,), which in turn our used to prioritize which investments we make and which partners we spend time on.

Partnering includes the search & assessment, evaluation, structuring, negotiation and closing of strategic relationships with external companies, involving products, technologies and other product-related assets to support our digital goals.  Sanofi believes digital will transform the way therapies are discovered, developed, and brought to patients, providers, and payers.  Additionally, digital solutions represent new ways of improving care at a reduced cost with improving the patient & consumer experience.  Partnering with digital health startups, tech companies, and others in this space is important to drive transformation.

Position Overview:

The Head of Partnering & Strategy position is a key enabler to achieving Sanofi’s corporate objectives by supporting strategy and leading the partnering efforts to support its achievement.  In addition to supporting strategy, the leader will be responsible for optimizing deal processes and the coordination and collaboration with relevant business partners including the Digital Heads, Due Diligence, Valuation, Legal, Alliance Management, and key stakeholders of the opportunity (business unit and/or functional area).  Transactions can include in-licensing, collaborations, co-development / co-promotion, option agreements in addition to other types of innovative partnerships. 

Sanofi US is only considering candidates who are currently legally eligible to work in the U.S. Company-paid relocation benefits are be offered for this position.

Mission and Objectives / Key Accountabilities

  • Support our strategic themes work and act as a coach to the team.  Focus on mentoring team on a rigorous, repeatable “process” for creating strategic insights, strategic themes, inclusive of storytelling, narrative, and actionable recommendations i.e. Frame the Opportunity, Frame the Challenge, Frame the Approach, Frame the Solution

  • Develop and execute a holistic and proactive (not reactive) digital partner program.  Program elements should be based on digital “themes” from our strategy and a “point of view” on where we want to play, why, which partners might be optimal, and what type of partnerships (and KPI’s) are most relevant

  • Build and lead team of partnering professionals in support of Sanofi’s Digital ambitions. Mentor and support our strategy team on strategic insights and turning strategy into a repeatable process

  • Key member of Digital Strategy leadership team and trusted advisor to senior leadership on digital strategy and partnering topics

  • Identify partnering opportunities and lead transaction execution

    • Identify strategic partner themes, goals, measures that help “drive” the partnership strategy

    • Drive deal process based on above strategy i.e. know where we want to play beforehand, and work with partner candidates based on our goals

    • Lead cross-functional teams including senior scientific, technical, finance, commercial, medical, market access, industrial affairs, regulatory and other functional representatives to develop optimal deal structures

    • Contribute to and lead internal teams in business case development, financial modeling, and valuation analysis incorporating probability, time, cost, budget impacts, and returns to allow for optimal strategic and investment decision making

    • Gather benchmarks and analyze comparables of BD transactions

    • Develop deal structures and term sheets to drive or support negotiation of deal terms with 3rd parties

    • Work closely with Legal, Finance and other business development and licensing functions on term sheet, contract development and execution

    • Present opportunities and make recommendations to senior management and ExCom

    • Manage project and internal alignment / decision making processes

    • Track and maintain a robust pipeline of active deals and potential target partners

  • Expand Sanofi’s reputation as partner of choice, including creating external content and speaking at relevant events

  • Develop and maintain relationships with a wide array of industry participants including entrepreneurs, incubators / accelerators, investors, academic institutions, and investment bankers

  • Assess new markets and landscape competition or comparable companies

  • Coordinate with Sensing, Operations, Governance, Pod Leaders, and relevant functions

  • Optimize deal processes

Core Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelors Degree is required. 

  • MBA Degree is preferred

  • A minimum of 12 years of work experience in Life sciences; Health Care, or the Technical Industry, or other relevant experience is required

  • A minimum of 3 years in digital health space either from an investor, strategic partner, or start-up perspective is required

  • Demonstrated track record of working or working across a highly matrixed environment with a high degree of proven collaboration across multiple stakeholders and internal clients is required

  • Current and recent experience in formally managing or leading a team is preferred

  • Knowledge of the Pharmaceutical / Biotech / Medical Device Industry(ies), especially Product Development and/or Commercialization is preferred

  • Proven experienced in leading a range of deal structures across the Life Sciences; Healthcare and/or Technical Industry is required

  • Experience working within a Global environment is preferred

  • Demonstrated leadership in strategy and partnering functions

  • Selected candidate will demonstrate strong core experience within Scouting; Analysis, Internal Stakeholder Management and guidance in addition to developing key KPI’s

  • Fluency in written and spoken English

  • This position may require up to 20% overall business travel
