Job Overview

This senior level position Global Head of D&I in Clinical Trials is responsible for ensuring Sanofi Pharma and vaccine clinical trials reflect the diversity of participants relative to real world disease demographics. This role is responsible to drive the Sanofi vision, strategy and implementation of a holistic framework supporting all indications in the multi therapeutic pipeline. Through the development and direction of a project management office (PMO), and multi-stakeholder steering committee, Sanofi’s clinical staged programs will establish D&I disease and geographic specific action plans that reflect policies and expectations aligned with external stakeholders that also build long term capacity for study execution.

In addition to ensuring clinical trials are demographically representative, this position is responsible for a communications strategy that effectively provides relevant and regular updates on Sanofi’s progress and industry leadership to both internal and external stakeholders (eg, consortia, trade orgs, HCPs and patient advocacy organizations). The communication strategy will maintain transparency on progress, vision and establish the company reputation as a leading and innovative biopharma company dedicated to advancing CT D&I on behalf of patients.

Reporting to Global Head of Clinical Operations, this role will work across functions to align on opportunities & strategies for relevant global partnerships, i.e. internal and external partnerships to ensure clinical trial diversity engages the Sanofi clinical trial ecosystem as well as appropriate external experts and partners. The Global Head of D&I in Clinical Trials will be responsible for identification and reporting of trial diversity metrics against KPIs aligned with Development and Corporate Diversity leadership. Immediate scope is prioritized with a US focus but has an eye towards near term global strategies integrated and coordinated with the Steering Committee and PMO membership for rapid infrastructure development and roll out.

Diversity and Inclusion in Clinical Trials is a relatively new initiative for the company and pharma industry in general. This role will act as the conduit of information and knowledge where Sanofi can contribute to and learn from the collective pharma industry. As such, this role will identify contribution and learning opportunities through networking with relevant external stakeholders and experts in the topic of trial diversity.

The position is open globally.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the development of the global D&I strategy, roadmap, communication plan and action plan to implement Sanofi’s business strategy to ensure Pharma and vaccine clinical trials are appropriately diverse to represent disease demographics across the entire portfolio of products.
  • Create and maintain the global infrastructure for trial D&I (Project Management Office, Steering Committee, identify key stakeholders, e.g.  R&D, Medical, Regulatory Digital and externally
  • Identify internal process improvements to increase diverse participation in clinical trials
  • Develop a robust strategy to implement digital tools and technology to improve trial diversity
  • Working with global project and individual study teams, ensure trial D&I strategy and planning for projects across Sanofi portfolio including understanding patient demographics, diversity target setting,
  • Oversee the development of impactful (via measurement) initiatives at the disease, program, study and geographic level that remove barriers for clinical trial participation
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert on trial diversity for internal and external audiences. Engage internal Sanofi teams across enterprise and external health care providers, study site staff, key opinion leaders, patient advocacy groups and community leaders.
  • Provide updates to company and department leadership on trial diversity activities and progress, including risks and benchmarking.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to internal Sanofi teams to understand diversity goals and implement process change or improvement to achieve those goals.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on opportunities to collaborate with community leaders, patient advocacy groups, Health Care Provider organizations, etc. to improve understanding of barriers in trial diversity and propose solutions.
  • Engage with industry partners and trade organizations in sharing knowledge and contribute to learnings around the topic of trial diversity
  • Build and manage the non-study budget for Diversity in clinical trials activities and resources
  • Ensure Sanofi policies are established and maintained in alignment with the regulatory bodies and industry consortia positions.
  • Represent, as relevant, in industry and other consortia/ forums/ initiatives
  • Liaise with Sanofi’s Chief Diversity Office to define and track the trial diversity KPIs as part of the global D&I goals and objectives
  • D&I in Clinical Trials Team Development:
    • Hire, train and develop a team dedicated to improving trial diversity.
    • Anticipate future team needs according to portfolio evolution and hire and train accordingly. 
    • This role is expected to lead through influence across multiple departments in the company (Operations, Development, Medical….)

About you

  • Advanced Degree in healthcare: PhD, PharmD or MD preferred; relevant experience with demonstrated leadership capabilities accepted
  • 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical industry, clinical research organization, or clinical practice/research
  • Expert understanding of current and anticipated clinical development D&I regulations, expectations and policies; experience in leading D&I in clinical trials initiatives preferred
  • Experience in hiring, managing and leading diverse teams
  • In depth understanding of clinical research environment and key players and external stakeholders involved in clinical research (Study site staff, health care providers, patient advocacy groups, regulatory environment, industry partners.)
  • Ability to influence in a matrix environment
  • Ability to analyze data related to disease demographics, population demographics, disease prevalence, site diversity recruitment capacity assessment
  • Experience in presenting the goals/ambitions and accomplishment to company leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel for in-person meetings with Sanofi teams/internal stakeholders, external partners, investigators and site staff, community leaders, Patient groups, trade organizations...
